One of Stuart Stephenson’s first decisions as headmaster was to revert Box Hill Grammar School back to the name of New College. He then set about trying to boost enrolments by actively participating in Box Hill’s civic affairs and improving the tone and standard of New College. But despite his efforts and enthusiasm, enrolments remained stagnant. He stayed only three years before heading to a warmer climate with a welcome role change – deputy headmaster at Brisbane Grammar School followed by a 12 year term as headmaster until 1940.
