Box Hill Grammar School students 1928 – Rose Street, Box Hill

Box Hill Grammar School’s council determined it needed to recruit a younger headmaster –  hopefully one who was a Methodist which reflected the denominational persuasion of the Box Hill community.

With the Rose St buildings in decay, they entered negotiations with the Methodist Church on the matter of ownership and relocation. The Methodist Board of Education, which was looking to expand its educational influence, accepted the council’s proposal and assumed responsibility for the school.

Through the efforts of parents, friends and local community leaders who believed it was a school worth saving, Box Hill Grammar was again rescued from the brink of closure.

The call  went out to Charles Fitzroy Walker to return as headmaster and a sprawling property in Station St Box Hill was up for sale.

Box Hill Grammar School was about to begin a remarkable new era.
